Critical discontinuous operated converter topology.

LED based backlights can be used for backlighting LCD displays for TVs, monitors and other displays. The electronic drive circuit for driving the LEDs controls the light output in color and/or intensity.

The driver circuit as shown in fig 1 is intended to operate LEDs with a dc current. An advantage of the shown circuit is its characteristic of zero voltage and zero current switching (ZVS;ZCS).

Additional advantages are:

-                      low component count

-                      no transformer and no elcaps for output filtering

-                      ZVS at turn-off and ZCS at turn-on

-                      High power conversion efficiency of >90% at nominal load

-                      Low generation of EMI
