A Data protection method of HDD with sector properties

Disclosure is a system to protect the data on the HDD, which has "Properties" on each sectors. The system consists of the PC(personal computer) Hardware, System BIOS and the HDD. The PC Hardware should have nonvolatile memory having the capability of the write-protect once it is locked. The System BIOS should be first software module to run after POR(Power On Reset), and be guaranteed to be secured. The combination of them can provide a system to protect the data on the HDD in the cases below.

- Protect the MBR (Master Boot Record) of the HDD

- Protect the OEM Factory Image/Preload Image stored in the partition of the HDD

- Protect the PARTIES (define in ANSI specification) area data

- Protect the User data in the specified partition of the HDD

The properties are defined as Read and Write, and may have the extendibility for future requirements. Read is the property showing this sector can be read from the system BUS. Write is the property indicating any data can be written into this sector from the system BUS. If HDD have the encoding/decoding with some security key, Encryption property might be added. This disclosure only describes the READ and WRITE properties. The HDD can be ATA/ATAPI or some equivalent HDD, and should provide the following interface and functionality to program the sector properties.

a.1) Have the properties for each sector. The properties are Read and Write.

a.2) Have the default setting which allows the Read/Write operation for all sectors.

a.3) Provide the command to change the properties of the specified sector.

a.4) Keep the properties in the nonvolatile memory in HDD until the another command for the sector change the properties.
