Background

Currently, 90% of end users do not realize that by reducing the backlight brightness from “medium” to “minimum” they could easily extend battery life by approximately 20%. In addition,

changes to the OS power policy concerning maximum battery life could be made to allow the CPU to run at the lowest Mhz.

General Description

The disclosed method combines all platform power-consuming factors (i.e. CPU, chipset, graphics, backlight, Wireless LAN, OS Power Policy, etc.) so that they can be controlled by a single button � (e.g. F10). See slides 1 through 6. The disclosed method adds the power management module sync with the speed control software (SCA), which is then linked to the desired button or hot key.

The disclosed method has two power modes:

 

  • Automatic/Intelligent. This is the default mode, enabled when power changes from AC to DC.
  • Travel Mode/Longer Battery Mode. This mode is designed for extended battery use. The user presses the button or hot key, and the entire platform switches to longer life battery mode.

In addition, for graphics power management, the Gfx battery mode works on low performance mode so that several ~200mW can be saved.
