TETRA DMO offers the possibility of direct communication between DM-MSs, e.g. without the need of an intervening base station. It provides a simple and robust system which will allow communication in areas where there may be no V+D coverage.

Introduction to DMO Gateway operation

TETRA direct mode operation using a gateway offers the possibility of connecting DM-MSs to the V+D trunking system, or vice versa, in either an individual call or a group call. The gateway re-transmits information received from the DM-MS to the V+D system and vice versa. A gateway may broadcast information to mobile subscribers in periodic transmissions of a presence signal.

Introduction to DMO Repeater operation

TETRA DMO using a repeater offers the possibility to support DM communications over an enhanced coverage area from that typically achieved in direct MS-MS operation. A repeater re-transmits information received from one DM-MS to other DM-MS(s) over the DM air interface. A repeater may broadcast information to mobile subscribers in periodic transmissions of a presence signal.

The Issue

Direct mode calls can use one of the following communication types:

§         via a DMO/TMO Gateway

§         via a DMO Repeater

§         direct MS-MS communication.

This publication proposes how to select the communication type that suits best the user's purpose with a minimal number of user inputs.
