The home market has never had a large impact in the data backup / storage industry. Backup tape drives and media are generally too expensive for the home market.

The home market has already adopted Digital Video Recorders. These recorders use a Firewire or USB
2.0 connection to transfer large raw digital video (AVI) from tape to machine. The DVR (Camcorders) support signals from the computer to start, stop, find next scene, etc. The tapes for DVRs are inexpensive and widely available.

The practice of encoding data into streams of video or images has also been widely known for some time now. This technique takes the header information of a video, sound or image file, and then populates the data blobs within with raw data. This technique would produce a "static" image that could be decoded back into the original files.

This concept combines the above technologies into a single unique concept: utilizing a DVR device as a backup or mass storage device for home computers.

One way to implement this would be to develop or re-use an existing data -> video encoding tool, then embedding that codec into a virtual device driver for a tape backup device that translates normal tape backup commands into the parallel DVR firewire commands. This would allow for real-time encoding of data from any backup software to any firewire device.
