Introduction

This document enables us to show how to receive and deal with more than 125 e-mails per second; thanks to a high available and scalable infrastructure. It shows that it is possible to create a technical infrastructure to manage asynchronous process based on e-mail exchange over internet. This solution has been built in order to explain how it would be possible to receive millions of e-mail on a centralized infrastructure. In the studied case, we must be able to receive up to 1 million of email in two hours each evening, so more than 125 e-mails per seconds, and read and use information hold into these e-mails (means open the email, read the attachment and send the information to a database). And of course with high-availability (it is not possible to lose any e-mail), scalability (medical spendings are increasing ).

IBM can make use of Lotus Domino offering to answer such challenge. We have done a proof of concept in order to show that with Domino Server and some specific customization and development it is possible to build a high-available and scalable infrastructure to receive and process more than 125 e-mails.

Technical solution

The hardware infrastructure is based on 5 RS6000 computers. Four of them are used to create two Domino server clusters. These domino servers are used to received the e-email, sent by four Workstation. The e-mails are composed with an attachment which size is 2 Kbytes (represents the average size of the actual attachments).
