Abstract

The Socket Removal Tool was developed to eliminate damage to the computer card and the pins on the socket spacer modules that are mounted on the Double Data Rate (DDR) Memory Test Station (DMTS) card tester. Before having the Socket Removal Tool we would damage the card and the socket spacers used on the tester when replacing worn out socket modules. The Socket Removal Tool has specially made jaws when pinched together apply equal pressure on the module to be removed and has limited travel to prevent the damage of pins on the card and module. Thus removing the socket spacers without damaging the DMTS card tester and modules being removed.

Socket Removal Tool

The invention is some specially made jaws that are welded to a pliers for removing a socket spacer that is attached to the Double Data Rate (DDR) Memory Test Station (DMTS) card tester. By using the pliers, an operator can use the new tool and just squeeze them together and the socket gets lifted off without doing any damage to the DMTS card or the pins on the module.

The problem was removing the socket spacers when they get worn out. We would have to take a screwdriver and pry off the socket spacer, thus damaging the DMTS card and the socket spacer. The invention makes it easier and more applicable in removing the socket spacers without damaging the DMTS card and without damaging the pins on the socket spacer. This lets us reuse the socket spacers because there is no damage to them which results in a cost savings.

This special tool could be used by others and in different applications on removing spacers or specialized modules (see the figures below).
