Abstract

This invention provides novel ring-tones for a mobile telephone and differential call-handling, both selectable according to the caller's identity. In one embodiment the caller's short voice message is downloaded to the phone as a ring-tone while the caller remains on hold and played on the handset, enabling the called party to decide whether to accept the call.

   A telephone call is answered by an automated answering system that invites the caller to leave a short audio message and stay on the line. We digitize the message and transmit it to the called party's phone as a ring-tone. The message plays on the called party's phone as an audible ring-tone. If the called party accepts the call, we connect the calling and called parties.

The ring-tone (voice message) and caller ID help the called party decide how to handle the call: answer the phone, give a busy indication, play a recorded message to the caller, etc. Other variants are given below.

1. Selection of ring-tones based on caller-ID. During a first call, we map the caller ID to one of a set of ring-tones by algorithmically characterizing the caller's voice, without user input. For a second call from the same caller ID, the phone plays the determined ring-tone.
