        � � � � � On a conventional multifunction PCI card, each function has a PCI function number. Each logical function has a physical location on the board, such as an upper port, lower port, or other location. The location is hard coded to a PCI function number. For example, PCI function 0 is always the upper port. To change the location, the board must be redesigned to make a cross between the port so that� PCI function 0 = upper port on the device= lower port on the redesigned board

        � � � � � Conventionally, each board is a customer-specific layout, even if using the same device.

        � � � � � The disclosed method is an association between the PCI function number and the internal logical number. The PCI function number and the internal logical function are associated using a configurable block (see Figure 1 . 2 ), and internal logical function are hardly associated to physical port. This association enables compatibility with implementations of PCI-function 0 as the upper port and with implementations of PCI-function 0 as the lower port or any other location.
