Antimicrobial Polymer Compositions

Certain antimicrobial agents are particularly effective in a wide variety of end use applications when intimately mixed with or applied to a polymer product.  The present antimicrobial agents are 2,4,4’-trichloro-2’-hydroxydiphenyl ether; silver zeolite or silver glass; 4-t-butylamino-6-cyclopropylamino-2-methylthio-s-triazine, CAS No. 28159-98-0; thiabendazole, 2-(4-thiazolyl)benzimidazole, CAS No. 148-79-8 ; dichloro-octyl-isothiazolone; octyl-isothiazolone; 10,10-oxybisphenoxarsine; tebuconazole; tolnaftate ; and zinc bis-(2-pyridinethiol-1-oxide).

The polymer products are for example films, foams, molded parts, pellets, sheets, fibers/fabrics, slabs or coatings.  The polymer products are synthetic or natural or are blends of synthetic and natural products.

The term „intimately mixed“ means that the antimicrobial agents are either melt processed with the polymer or are an intimate part of a cured coating composition. 

The incorporation of the antimicrobial agents into the polymer products is performed by known methods such as dry blending in the form of a powder or wet mixing in the form of solutions, dispersions or suspensions in an inert solvent, water or oil.  They may be added directly into the processing apparatus (extruders, mixers, kneaders, etc.) in an inert atmosphere or ambient atmosphere.  The present antimicrobial agents may be added in the form of a masterbatch or polymer concentrate.

The application of the antimicrobial agents is for example performed by applying the dissolved or dipsersed agents to the polymer product with or without subsequent evaporation of the solvent or the suspension/dispersion material. The antimicrobial agents can also be sprayed onto the polymer products.

The present polymer products comprise for example about 0.05% to about 3.0% by weight of the active antimicrobial agents. The antimicrobial agents may be employed singly or in any combination in order to achieve desired results.

The polymer products are comprised of for example polypropylene, polyethylene, styrenics, polyesters, polycarbonates, PMMA, polyvinyls, Nylon, polyurethane, acrylic, epoxies, acetates, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene, fluoropolymers, latex, nitrile copolymers, nylons, polychloroprene, polyvinylchloride, Rayon, rubbers (natural and synthetic), silicone, vinyls and combinations thereof.

The antimicrobials are effective against bacteria, algae, fungus, mold and mildew that may cause odor, stain, discoloration, unsightly texture, decay or deterioration of physical properties.

The antimicrobials and their combinations may be used in further combination with other antimicrobials.  They may be used in combination with processing stabilizers selected from hindered phenolic antioxidants, organic phosphorus compounds, hydroxylamines, nitrones, amine oxides and benzofuranones.  They may be used in combination with light stabilizers, for example hindered amine light stabilizers and/or ultraviol...
