INVENTION TITLE: Intelligent medical image print job re-routing.

PROBLEM/BACKGROUND:

The intelligent print job re-routing maximizes the printer usage.  It also optimizes the printer usage based on the print job priorities, availability of high-speed printers etc.

DICOM Printers are used in medical image printing.

Intelligent print job re-routing is required for various reasons like

§         Printer goes down due to various reasons like -- jams, out of film, low on chemicals/toner etc.

§         Various print jobs submitted with different priorities -- High, Medium, Low.

§         Print jobs waiting in the queue when other printers are free.

§         Long print time due of large images being printer – and the print time depends on the size of the image and the number of images. It also depends on the Printer make.

§         Addition of new DICOM printers.

§         Removal of existing DICOM printers.

The new design will have the information of all the available printers of the printing-system as a part of its configuration. This configuration file is in XML format, which is platform independent. This configuration mapping along with the printer and print job status will be continuously refreshed on the user's browser to give online status.

The new design includes the various Printer related information (such as Printer Name, Type, Location) and the corresponding mapping of the Printer Status (Ready, Out of Paper, Film Jam, Out of Order)

The new system detects the Printer Status frequently and the information is updated in the available mapping. When the system tries to print an image(s), in the best case, it will print successfully with the user-defined mapping. In the worst case, trying to print medical image(s), printing cannot the achieved because of the user-defined printer not being available. But, in case of the new design the system automatically picks up the best available free printer from the mapping pool and re-routes the print job to that printer based on various criteria's like print job priority, speed of the a...
