Abstract

A separate cable between a clock unit and an auxiliary heater is incorporated in a vehicle in addition to serial bus, such as a CAN-bus. The cable is powered at least when the ignition is off, but it requires less power from the battery unit. When a fault is registered by the auxiliary heater when the ignition is off, the auxiliary heater sends a time request to the clock unit, which returns an acknowledgement and the time counted by the clock unit. That time is then used as the time when the fault was registered.

The invention relates to a system and method for communication between a clock unit (CTS) and an auxiliary heater (AHS) in a vehicle. A provider of such an auxiliary heater is e.g. Ebersp├Ącher (www.eberspaecher.com).

Background of the invention

In the embodiment disclosed below, the vehicle is a long-haulage truck, but the invention may of course be implemented in any type of vehicle where at least one clock unit is present. The clock unit is not intended to be the clock unit in an ordinary instrument cluster, hereinafter referred to as the first clock unit, in front of a driver of the vehicle, but a second clock unit in the back wall of a cab of the vehicle. A bed is often present adjacent to the back wall and through the second clock unit a person who rests in the bed may set the time for a wake-up alarm and control an audio system (including radio, CD etc) from another position than from the driver seat.

When the ignition for the vehicle is on, both the auxiliary heater and the second clock unit gets a reference time (as well as a local time) from e.g. the first clock unit via e.g. a bus adapted for CAN, Flexray, TTCAN or any other communication protocol/system adapted/developed for a vehicle. However, when the ignition is off, there is no communication via the bus, since such a communication is considered as requiring too much power from a vehicle battery unit.
