Abstract

The following describes a method to protect the active data on an exported stacked volume containing exported logical volumes when the volume is inserted into a tape library. The method allows for the insert of both scratch volumes and exported stacked volumes by allowing a Convenience Input/Output Station to be changed between two modes. The Convenience Input/Output Station is allowed to be set to one of two modes, Import mode or non-Import mode. When the station is in Import mode all volumes with a J media type are put into the Import category. Conversely, when the station is in non-Import mode, all volumes with J media type are put into the normal insert category. The normal or default Convenience I/O station mode is selectable by the operator. If a facility does not use or rarely uses Export/Import it can select non-Import as the default mode for the station. When an import is required the operator can select a "Temporary Import Mode". Any J volumes inserted during this temporary mode are assigned to the Import category. The temporary mode lasts for one pass of the station. Conversely, if a facility uses Export/Import on an active basis, it can select Import as the default mode for the station. When non-import volumes need to be inserted into the library, the operator can select a "Temporary non-Import Mode". Any J volumes inserted during this temporary mode are assigned to the Insert category. The temporary mode lasts for one pass of the station. 1
