Abstract

A light is mounted to an arm which is flush mounted to a vehicle panel when closed so as to be unobtrusive and which is pivoted outwardly for directing illumination from a light source mounted to the interior side of the arm. With such a system, the light source is hidden when not in use and, when extended, can be moved to a variety of selected positions and focused to provide a light pattern to selected areas. In a preferred embodiment, the pivoted arm is coupled to a damper such that the arm can be moved to any number of desired, selected positions and remain in the selected position.

VEHICLE INTERIOR LIGHT

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE

A light is mounted to an arm which is flush mounted to a vehicle panel when closed so as to be unobtrusive and which is pivoted outwardly for directing illumination from a light source mounted to the interior side of the arm. With such a system, the light source is hidden when not in use and, when extended, can be moved to a variety of selected positions and focused to provide a light pattern to selected areas. In a preferred embodiment, the pivoted arm is coupled to a damper such that the arm can be moved to any number of desired, selected positions and remain in the selected position.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to a vehicle interior light and particularly one which is mounted to the inside of a vehicle door and is movable between a closed position flush with the vehicle door and an extended position for directing illumination to the interior of the vehicle.

Vehicle interior lights used for providing illumination under low ambient light conditions for map reading and the like typically are mounted within the vehicle headliner, overhead console, or, in some cases, in visors which can be moved to direct illumination downwardly into the lap area of a vehicle operator or passenger. Although providing light which is directable to some extent, such illumination sources typically are exposed whether in use or not and, therefore, to some extent interfere with the interior aesthetics of the vehicle. Additionally, the range of adjustment for providing light to different areas of the vehicle are typically somewhat limited. Also, many vehicles do not include overhead consoles which permit the mounting of such auxiliary lighting systems thereto.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The light of the present invention provides a unique mounting position for a light within one or more doors of the vehicle and provides a light which can be mounted to an arm which is flush mounted to the vehicle door when the light is closed so as to be unobtrusive. The light has an arm which pivots outwardly and upwardly from the vehicle door for directing illumination from a light source mounted to the interior side of the arm. With such a system,

the light source is hidden when not in use and, when extended, can be moved to a variety of selected positions and focused to provide patterned light to selected areas of the vehicle interior.

In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the interior light includes a pivoted arm coupled to a damper such that the arm can be moved to any number of desired, selected positions and remain in the selected position. Further, in a preferred embodiment of the invention, the light source can be focused by rotating a lens in a housing for moving the lens toward and away from a light source to provide a larger or smaller beam of light therefrom.
