   Disclosed is a means to improve starting characteristics and to
extend the life of lighting source of the feed-through type optical
scanner, which produces black surroundings image.

By making the reflectance of the sight when document is not present
to 10% to 20%, not complete black, automatic gain adjustment of
video amplifier can be performed even in the optical scanners of
this type. This type optical scanners were not able to perform
automatic gain adjustment because the level of signal was too weak
to perform it over completely black sight. Black sight was
required to produce black surroundings image of documents.
Reflectance of 10% to 20% gives enough signal level to perform gain
adjustment, and it produces black surroundings image of documents
at the same time.
