Abstract

Disclosed is a method to implement a shock sensor inside hard disk drive (HDD) enclosure. The shock sensor is used to stop writing operation by sensing unexpected shock, and is conventionally located on a printed circuit board (PCB). The shock sensor that is located inside the HDD enclosure is able to sense the shock faster and more directly than the sensor on the PCB does. That is better situation for high density of tracks per inch (TPI).

   Disclosed is a method to implement a shock sensor inside hard
disk drive (HDD)
enclosure.

      The shock sensor is used to stop writing operation by sensing
unexpected shock,
and is conventionally located on a printed circuit board
(PCB).

    The shock sensor that is located inside the HDD enclosure is
able to sense the
shock faster and more directly than the sensor on the PCB
does.

      That is better situation for high density of tracks per inch
(TPI).

      And the higher sensitivity is also necessary to realize the
higher density of TPI.

      Then these situation makes it easier to sense the vibration
from the HDD itself.

      And it is hard to distinguish the vibration and the shock
without any device.

    Fortunately many of the vibrations synchronize HDD spindle
rotation.

And the higher order of the vibration also can be calculated.

      So those can be canceled by adding a proper filter to the
output signal of the
shock sensor.

      Specially low frequency vibration/shock below about 500Hz
can be canceled
across the board because the HDD servo system can take care.
As a result, the faster reaction and the higher sensitivity
of the shock sensor
system can be realized.
