Abstract

Networking connectivity is a 'black art' to most users, it is the most misunderstood and mis-configured of end user computer services. Networking support calls are the most numerous type of calls made to help desks, and often the most difficult to resolve. Calls on erroneous network issues, or network issues being mis-routed in the call centers.

Agent for network connectivity problem resolution

A solution is a combination of software that "learns" the network configuration and connectivity when connected to a system on the network. It would gather data from the systems configuration files, much like an analyzer does, then automatically update any wrong information configured on the system, run more diagnostics and output specific error messages if any remain.

When executed the configuration program does diagnostics on the interface to get to the network and uses a combination of promiscuous and normal modes to learn the network configuration and sets the interface and OS configuration to match a best guess as outlined in the flowchart. This eliminates problems around subnets, gateways, IP addresses, routers, and configuration - to simple network outages or inaccessibility
