         Disclosed is the method for reading the serial
number on the slider
of head gimbal assembly(HGA).

* Current method

         Fig.1 shows the current method for reading the
serial number.

         Two prisms are located near the slider , one is
for lighting the
surface of the slider and the other is for the
CCD camera to get
the image of the serial number.

         However, it is not easy to focus the CCD camera
on both sides

         (left hand side and right hand side) of the
serial number.

         Both prisms are located at an angle against the
serial number on
the slider and this leads to a lower rate in
recognition.

* Invented method

           Fig.2 shows the invented method for reading
the serial number.

           In Fig.2, the light through both the fiber
and the lens is bent
with two mirrors(A and B) and illuminates
the serial number of
the slider. The CCD camera is located in the
axis(light axis)
shown in Fig.2 and can get the clear image
through the two
mirorrs(A and B) and the lens.
Consequently, it is easy to focus the CCD
camera on both
sides of the serial number and it turned out
to be a higher
rate in recognition.

          One is composed of a prism and the other is...
