Disclosed is a system that enables intuitive and efficient access
to and effective use of 3D information on the Web by multiple
users in various industries. The system allows users to
manipulate, update, store, search, retrieve, and reuse 3D
contents and related materials synchronously or asynchronously in
a 3D collaborative environment.

The unique features of the system are as follows:

The two components of the system, "3D Collaboration" and "3D

Geometry Storage and Search," are combined to allow searching
for and reuse of 3D contents in a collaborative environment.
The system stores the sequence of operations by which multiple

users manipulated and updated 3D contents in a 3D
collaborative environment, and allows users who could not
participate in the collaborative work to play back the session
later to see how the contents were manipulated and updated in
the environment.

models and related materials by using query keys such as a 3D
model and/or its features.

As shown in Figure 1, the system consists of two major
components: (1) 3D Collaboration and (2) 3D Geometry Storage and
Search.

(1) 3D Collaboration Component
The 3D Collaboration component provides a capability for
sharing 3D contents among multiple users. It is divided into
three modules: (a) 3D Collaboration Platform, (b) 3D Operation
Recorder, and (c) 3D Operation Player.

(a) 3D Collaboration Platform
The 3D Collaboration Platform module allows multiple users
to manipulate and update 3D contents in the 3D collaborative
environment and to store the resulting data with related
materials via the 3D Data Storage module. Updating 3D
contents includes updating the geometry and attributes of
the 3D models and attaching and updating related materials
such as annotations and other multimedia information. Each
user can add a 3D model retrieved by the 3D Data Search
module to the current 3D collaborative environment.

(b) 3D Operation Recorder
The 3D Operation Recorder module stores in operation-log
format the process by which multiple users manipulated and
