    Disclosed is an invention that extends the ability of a user to view multiple parts of an object simultaneously, maintaining context.

    In a traditional graphical user interface application, a window typically provides a user with a view of part of the virtual 'whole'. For instance, a word processing application might allow the user at any one time to see only a subset of the entire document. Often the user can navigate the view-port to see other parts of the document by manipulating global vertical and/or horizontal scroll bars.

Sometimes, however, there may be a discrete part of the viewed object that the user would like to scroll up or down, without affecting the rest of what is currently displayed in the view. For instance, a spreadsheet might exist that has 26 columns labeled A through Z, and 100 rows labeled 1 through 100. Suppose the currently viewed section of the entire table shows columns G-P and rows 34-78. Now further suppose that the user wants to view cols Q-T but only for rows 41-43, without affecting what is viewed for the other rows at present. There is no way to do this that I know of in today's implementations.

    Proposed: the capability for a user to select a part of the whole (e.g., to continue the spreadsheet example from above, he would select columns G-P and rows 34 - 78 using a conventional selection mechanism such as drag-swipe) and then surface a pop-up menu for the selection (using a conventional mechanism such as a right-click of the mouse over the selected area). The context menu would have horizontal and/or vertical scroll bars (as appropriate).
