CICS/IMS transanctions provide limited access to legacy data in mainframes, as predefined by transaction designers. However, they are usually the only mechanism available to access legacy data in mainframes. Object query, on the other hand, provides users high flexibility in both constraint specification and returned data format.

The proposed technique allows users to specify data retrieval using object query and will automatically determine the ordering and combination of CICS/IMS transactions to use in order to solve the user's data contraints to return expected data.

The proposed technique first models the available CICS/IMS transactions as object relational views with parameters. The user's object query, which can be considered also as an object relational view, is matched against all the available CICS/IMS transactions using a view containment technique. The ordering and combination of CICS/IMS transactions to be used for solving the given object query is determined as the result of this matching.
