Abstract

A spin valve type sensor usually use a pinned ferromagnetic layer and a free ferromagnetic layer. The magnetization of the pinned layer is pinned by coupling it to an antiferromagnetic material such as NiO or IrMn or PtMn. The magnetization of the free layer is free to rotate as it senses a signal field. The pinned and free layers are usually separated by a Cu spacer. During deposition of the free layer, magnetic easy axis can be set in the desired direction relative to the air bearing surface plane to optimize head sensitivity and magnetic stability. Higher read back sensitivity is achieved for the free layer with magnetic easy axis perpendicular to the air bearing surface. This is due to the fact that this configuration provides free layer with higher permeability. 1
