Disclosed is a peripheral structure for high reliability active matrix liquid crystal displays, especially for in-plane-switching (IPS) mode thin-film-transistor (TFT) liquid crystal displays (LCDs).

    A liquid crystal display has an alignment layer for making initial arrangement of liquid crystal molecules. The alignment layer which is electrically isolated tends to collect contamination ions by effect of external electric field. A concentration of contamination ions into the alignment layer causes a deterioration of image quality. This problem is critical in peripheral edge of a display area, especially in left or right edge having fanouts of gate wirings, because a gate low voltage which is lower than an average potential of the display area dominates in the above area. Moreover, an alignment material tends to be deteriorated in the peripheral area because of invasion of a humidity through seal glue.
