A self biased differential GMR sensor with the following configuration is disclosed:

FM(1)/Cu/FM(2)/insulating spacer/FM(3)/Cu/FM(4)

FM(1), FM(4) are pinned ferromagnetic layers. The magnetizations of these layers are pinned 180 degree out of phase by the field from the sensor current. FM(2) and FM(3) are free ferromagnetic layers. The layers on top and bottom of the insulating spacer generate 180 degree out of phase signals in response to applied magnetic field. These signals are fed to the differential amplifier to achieve addition. The differential amplifier cancels any common mode noise such as caused by the thermal asperity.
