A Method of Notebook PC Security Leaving Alone

Disclosure is a method to provide the additional security feature onto Notebook PC conjunction to the current
security feature provided by ThinkPad system.

1. Overview

For the notebook PC system, its mobility is very important. However, this means that it may decrease the security level. To make the PC to be higher secured, several level of password might help. To protect the OS boot, the "Power On Password" is provided. To protect the administrator level setting, the "Supervisor Password" should be set. To protect the data on the HDD, the "Hard Disk Password" should be installed on ThinkPad. But the multiple password makes the usability degrade
sometimes. This disclosure descdribes one possible security feature can be implemented on current ThinkPad system considering the usability.

2. Security to be provided

Two level of security level is provided triggered by AC plag attaching/detaching in this disclosure. For the usability, the easy accessibility to the data might be desirable; no password is required to boot the system, launch some application. However, it is hard to maintain the high level of security. So the following two level security level is provided.

Normal Security Mode This is same as current ThinkPad security implementation by providing the following 3 passwords. On resuming from the sleeping state, only Power On Password or OS password is required, and HDD password is not
required as far as the HDD is presence before sleepigng state.

High Security Mode The system will enter into this mode only if this option is enabled. Once the option is enabled, and the system detects the AC adapter removal, the system saves this as the tamper evident, and POST/BIOS will require extra password to access the data by booting/resuming.

AC Adapter is removed during Off State POST code requires the "Supervisor P...
