Graphical interface method for updating firmware in multiple devices

Disclosed is a graphical user interface wizard to allow firmware update of
multiple printers. This method also facilitates printer selection by allowing
updates only to printers that are likely to be successfully updated.

When a device manufacturer makes firmware (or microcode) available for a
specific device model, a printer administrator will typically update all or
most of the devices of that model. In the past, printer management utilities
have provided the ability to update one printer's firmware at a time.

The invention provides a graphical interface method for simultaneous firmware
update of multiple printers with a wizard. In the wizard, the printer
administrator first specifies the file containing the firmware, as shown
below:

When the printer administrator selects the Next button, the second page of the
wizard is shown. This page contains a list of printers that are candidates
for firmware upgrade according to the following criteria:

The printer model is appropriate to be updated with the selected firmware
file.

The printer has the appropriate optional functions (for example,
PostScript) to be updated with the selected firmware file.

The printer is in a state in which it can be updated; for example, it has
no critical alerts.

The implementation of the second page is shown below:
