Abstract

This describes the mechanically thinning process for a cell assembly used for liquid crystal displays. In this process, the thickness of cell is to be reduced by the means of mechanical polishing technique just before the polarizer attach process. Prior to the mechanical polishing, all of the driver pads on the surface of TFT glass are covered with resin material in order to protect from being physically and chemically damaged by abrasives used in the mechanical polishing process.     The advantages of this process are : (1) Effective use of glass size can be expected because of
no requirement of any
additional outside space of the cell for another seal to protect driver pads
comparing to the idea of FDB JP8-1998-0504.
(2)Same manufacturing tools with the same process parameters as those of existing cell products
can be applicable till
polarizer attach process because of same cell thickness. which results in
less productivity impact.
