Abstract

Method for measuring traffic flow by analyzing cell to cell movements of mobile devices. Disclosed is a method to improve existing traffic analyzer system by analyzing cell to cell movements of mobile devices such as cellular telephones. Also disclosed is the business method of aggregating the information from multiple and overlapping cellular telephone companies. Predicting and indicating traffic congestion is a commercially lucrative area for information service providers like radio stations, Internet radio stations, wireless web operators etc. In prior art, helicopters, mobile physical patrols, accident reports from police, and fixed video/motion sensors at traffic choke points/signals are used to determine traffic congestion and the flow of traffic. In certain cities traffic signals are automatically adjusted according to the flow of traffic. However, the prior art schemes of determining traffic congestion and traffic flow are quite expensive.

Hence the problem is as follows: How to create an improved system of analyzing traffic flow and predict congestion? We propose a solution whereby the statistics on the cell-to-cell movements of cellular phones in moving vehicles is utilized to augment the existing infrastructure.
