Abstract

This article discloses an arm design for HDD actuators. Typically, the both end arms of the actuator show significantly different dynamic characteristics. This is due to the reason the the middle arms have two suspensions and the end arms only have one. The arms with one suspension have a higher natural frequency and would have high gain at the END ARM MODE frequency. The end arms are notched to reduce width as the figure below. The notch depth should be adjusted so that the end arm natural frequency matches the middle arms' frequencies. In this case, the notch is 1mm on each side. A depth of 0.5mm to 1.5mm should be appropriate according to the arm/suspension design.
