Accounting Application with Real Time View of POS System Status and Integration with Loss Prevention Systems

Disclosed is a Retail System Accounting application that provides a graphical view of what is

occurring in the store checkout lanes integrated into the view of the accounting data. The

disclosed Retail Accounting application is also integrated with the store's loss prevention

system.

Background :

A Retail Store Accounting application tracks/accounts for the money flowing through the store for operators and/or terminals. The accounting application runs in the back office and allows the bookkeeper to track amounts, determine when to make pickups, loans, etc. and perform the store close accounting procedures. It is important to note for this disclosure that the accounting
application runs in the back office and provides no view of what is actually going on in
the checkout
lanes. It simply reports/operates on the data in the accounting files. The accounting application displays the accounting data in the form
of a table with
rows and columns similar to the data in a spreadsheet like Lotus 123* or Microsoft Excel**.

Problem: One concern for retail stores is loss prevention. Two indicators of a loss prevention situation is the amount of time that a cash drawer stays open and the amount of time between items sold/scanned. Presently, in the current retail systems, this type of data is collected hourly by the POS(Point of Sale) systems and then reports can be manually run and then manually analyzed.

The disclosed system enhances the Retail System Accounting application to:
1) Real time display of POS system status via the following icons: Cash Drawer Open
Cash Drawer Closed Cash Drawer Open exceeding time threshold Unauthorized access to POS System Sale time exceeded threshold

2) Display the amount of time the cash drawer is open.

- Compare the amount of the open time against a threshold.

- If the threshold of open time is exceeded, perform the following actions:

- Visually indicate the threshold exceeded condition by coloring the cash drawer icon red.

- Send a message to the loss prevention system, indicating the detection in real time.

- Log the condition in an exception log file (time stamped for correlation with loss

prevention systems).

3) Monitors the amount of scan time(i.e. time between sale of items).
