Abstract

A methodology is disclosed that provides a structured approach to the creation of product information taxonomies. A product information taxonomy, also know as product classification, is a concise specification of the metadata needed to build product information databases, especially for electronic catalogs used in e-business. The methodology prescribes a set of tasks that allows any organization to create a product taxonomy that defines their product set. A sample representation of a product taxonomy is shown below.

  A methodology is disclosed that provides a structured approach to the creation of product information taxonomies. A product information taxonomy, also know as product classification, is a concise specification of the metadata needed to build product information databases, especially for electronic catalogs used in e-business. The methodology prescribes a set of tasks that allows any organization to create a product taxonomy that defines their product set. A sample representation of a product taxonomy is shown below.

The tasks prescribed in this structured methodology are:

Identification of source material Identification of abstract products (product families) Identification of product attributes and related information, such as value type, value range, unit of measure and so on. Assignment of ISA relationship with inheritance between abstract products Relating attributes to abstract products Determining and creating abstract products for attributes not assigned Placing common attributes in higher levels in higher level abstract product Assigning attribute values Identifying product associations and aggregations Assign product associations and aggregations between abstract products.
