Beneficient Method for Reserving MD as Reserved Area

Disclosed is a method for allocating reserved area in mid-region of Hard Disk Drives

(HDD). Reserved area is a special area used for holding fundumental data, parameters

that are peculiar to each drives, such as PES (Position Error Signal) gain, tap values,

etc., and used for micro code test sequence. Data loss in the reserved area will result

in degradiation of performance, or non-activation at worst. Thus, reserving the best

area for these information is one of the most important items to consider at developing

stage. In this disclosure, a beneficient method for reserving these area are desicribed.

The simplest way to divide disks' area by characteristics is to divide them in to three regions ; Inner, outer, and mid Inner area and outer area tend to have worse performance compared to mid area because of mechanical characterisitics. From this reason, outer and inner regions of the disk is not the best area for placing reserved area information. As a result, the last possible region to put those information will be the mid-region. mid-region has less possibility of having returnable errors or defects. Thus, using mid-region for the reserved area is the best choice from the viewpoint of reliability.

Although there are many reasons to have the reserved area in the mid-region, some problems still exist. One is the method to reserve its area. If reserving most-outer or most-inner region, addressing the Logical Block Address(LBA) would be simple. On the
