HYBRID GMR SENSOR USING GRANULAR GMR FILM

   A new GMR sensor design is disclosed which combines the spin valve sensor with
the granular GMR sensor to achieve higher magnetoresistance. The sensor
configuration is as follows:

Seed layer/AFM/FM(1)/Ru/FM(2)/Cu/Free layer/Cu/CoCu(Hybrid sensor)/Ta

The current flowing through the layers under the granular film, biases it. The
current polarity, and the pinned film magnetization direction are chosen so that
the magnetoresistance from the spin valve and the granular films add. It is also
possible to use composite layer for the granular sensor (CoCu/NiFeX) to lower its
switching field.
