Abstract

This invention creates a method by which a set-top box or webTV retrieves, stores and sends the closed-captioned text to a recipient as text in e-mail format. This invention solves the problem of having to view a TV program in order to read the closed-captioned content of a program. Also, prior to this invention there was not method available to obtain and re-transmit the closed-captioned content unless the complete video program was recorded and physically handed to a recipient. With this invention, the closed-captioned text can be forwarded to recipients that may not have access to a TV set, or converted to Braille for the blind.

This invention creates a method by which a set-top box or webTV retrieves, stores and sends the closed-captioned text to a recipient as text in e-mail format. This invention solves the problem of having to view a TV program in order to read the closed-captioned content of a program. Also, prior to this invention there was not method available to obtain and re-transmit the closed-captioned content unless the complete video program was recorded and physically handed to a recipient. With this invention, the closed-captioned text can be forwarded to recipients that may not have access to a TV set, or converted to Braille for the blind.

The method is implemented as follows:

1. The set-top box/Web TV (or an intelligent TV set) decodes the closed-captioned text as normal.

2. The viewer/user can specify the start time of collection of closed-captioning via several methods such as programmed TV control, or interactive using the TV remote control. The viewer/user specifies a recipient mailbox-id using an interactive menu on the unit. The time period is likewise specified.

3. Once started, the unit above stores the closed-captioned text in local storage (closed-captioned text rate is about 1200 bits per second). Closed captioned text can be compressed to a great extent, and set-top boxes with limited storage capacity may be implemented to do this.
