Abstract

Box shape products such as suit cases and large cram shell type Notebook PCs commonly have a pair of long span Top Cover and Bottom Cover. In many cases, those covers have two latches at both corners so that they can close tightly. There tends to be a gap at both corners for a single latch box. Therefore, double latches design is preferable for the cosmetic reason. But in case of double latches, there are several concerns. Cost : A set of latch consists of several precise parts such as a lever, a spring, catch and so on. Double latchs design requires double numbers of parts Space : Double latches need double space in the box. Usability : User may have to operate both latches simaltaniously. In case of the box design whose top cover opens sideward, not backward, one latch locates far side from a user, which is very incovienient to operate it. This invenstion is a system of lock mechanism, including two latches, one is the latch which is slided to open or rotated to open by pushing or pulling or rotating a handle or a knob or button, the other is a latch using a simple spring wire. The lock mechanism works based on the conbination of the two latches. But the second latch is very unique. The second latch is like as follows: When the covers are closed together, a Cap of the Top Cover comes closer to a Base of the Bottom Cover. While Top Cover is closing to Bottom Cover, a pin on top of the Base gose into a hole of a Cap. The pin is like a guide pin. This guide pin dose not allow the Cap moving around on XY plane once the pin is going into the hole. As the Cap comes closer to the Base , a spring wire installed on a taper side wall of the Base is compressed by a taper side wall of the Cap. As the Cap comes much closer to the Base and the two parts almost touch together, the compressed spring wire snaps into a slot on the side wall of the Cap. The wire stops the Cap moves away from the Base to Z direction. The Cap has been already ristricted XY directions. The Cap and the Base can not move to any directions. It is hard to take part of the Cap and the Base. But if the excessive force is applied to the spring wire. It can be taken part of together. It works as a fool proof mechanism that a user operates the latch at wrong way. In a normal operation, a user opens the first latch mounted at one edge of a cover at first and just pull the other edge of the cover. The spring wire in the second latch comes off easily because of the rotation force. 1
