Abstract

Disclosed is a new exchange tab stabilization structure for the GMR head. In this structure, exchange tabs have antiparallel pinned ferromagnetic layers while the sensor part of the free layer is single ferromagnetic film. The GMR stack has a free layer at the top. The entire stack is deposited first and then the track is defined by Ion-milling and RIE. The layers in the passive area are (only layers above the free layer shown): Free layer/Ru/CoFe/PtMn/Cap/Lead. The layers in the active track (layers above the free layer shown) are: Free layer/Ru/CoFeO. The ion-milling is stopped in CoFe layer, the reamining CoFe is oxidized to kill the moment. The oxidized CoFeOx acts as the specular reflective cap for the free layer. 1
