Abstract

With the interest in low cost drives it is advantageous to reduce the parts count in hard disk drives. Presented here is an integral spacer ring and disk. The significant interest in the use of plastic substrates makes this an option that could not have been considered before. Two versions are proposed: The first would have a rigid mold insert allowing more precision and strength for the spacer. The second would have the spacer made of the standard substrate material, with this molding process the additional cost of the spacer ring could be completely eliminated.
