Abstract

Stored email databases are large consumers of corporate resources. There are methods to conserve disk space based on date email messages. However attachments are often sent and resent changing the timestamp on the email but passing around the same appended data. Identifying and removing duplicated attachments could save resources.

Intelligent method for garbage collection of outdated email attachments

A method that scans databases, identifies duplicate attachments, and stores only one base copy replacing the reference with a pointer to the attachment. This way multiple copies of the same data are not maintained and storage is freed.
