    When building all kind of keyboard used in different applications worldwide the keyboard layout differs form country to country and from application to application.

    For example the layout of a numeric key block can have a calculator or telephone layout.

Problem:

    Each application requires the keyboard to be customized during manufacturing process by hardware or software installation / configuration.

    The keyboard customization can be achieved by a software configuration step or by jumper settings during manufacturing.

    This results in additional effort and has a potential risk for wrong setup. In some applications it is not even possible to display the clear key value of the pressed key to verify the customization.

    E.g. for applications like (encrypting) Pin Pads when entering the PIN data. The key value will presented as an asterisk ' * '.

Solution: To avoid the customization step and manufacturing effort the keyboard should identify its keyboard layout automatically.

    For keyboards based on following design this can be achieved in a very easy, reliable and cost effective way.

Design: The keyboard consists of an PCB (Printed circuit board) with electrical contacts for each key. Closed contacts on the PCB are recognized as valid key strokes.

    The keys are integrated into a keyboard foil that is directly arranged at the PCB preferably used adhesive material. The keys in the keyboard foil are embossed and have co...
