Short Message Assisted Multimodal Voice/Telephony Server

This invention enables the SMS channel on voice server. With this enablement, SMS will complement the voice channel in input and output for better performance and expand the usage of voice server.

Text based short message service (SMS) and voice based voice/telephony service currently are prevalent and useful information delivery services. Each of them uses a different single channel to interact with end user. The following table list their disadvantage as single channel:

SMS Voice input 1. input message size is
limited
2. need user to concentrate attention while inputting.
3. input method is difficult on mobile phone.

Output 1. Output message size is
limited.

2. Need user to concentrate attention while reading message( can not read it while driving)

1. The recognition is not 100% correct, esp. with open vocabulary and noisy environment.
2. Under some special environment such as meeting environment, voice can not be used.

1. Compared with text message, output message by voice is not easy for later retrieval.

Interaction 1. No instant 1. User can not interact with interaction(latency). too much selection options.

From the above comparison, we can clarify that :

1. Each single channel service has its innate disadvantages.
2. Text channel with SMS do not have the voice channel disadvantages. User can input message accurately under open vocabulary. And short message can be stored on mobile devices for further retrieval.
3. Voice channel do not have the short message channel disadvantages. Voice application provides real time interaction and do not have the input message limitation if no recognition is needed. TTS generated or prerecorded output message do not have the size limitation. And unlike text based message, image or video, voice channel does not request full user attention. User can use the audio channel while other accompanying tasks such as driving, walking occupying the eye/visual channel.

Although each single channel service has its innate disadvantages, the novelty of this invention

is to make use of the advantages of two combined channels to complement the disadvantage of single channel. For instance, text channel with SMS do not have the voice channel disadvantages, user can input message accurately under open vocabulary. And short message can be stored on mobile devices for further retrieval. On the other hand, voice channel do not have the short message channel disadvantages, voice based application provides real time interaction and do not have the input message limitation if no recognition is needed. And TTS generated or prerecorded output message do not have the output size limitation as well. Unlike text channel, voice channel need not full attention from user and can work while other accompanying tasks such as driving, walking occupying the eye/visual channel. Thus, with text based SM service enabled on voice/telephony server, the services, espe...
