Abstract

Disclosed is a method and program for monitoring an ongoing activities of a host operating system(OS) and all of the guest OSs from one of the guest OSs. The implementation of the program is that functionality of a linux as one of guest OSs is used to monitor real-time performance of the guests on IBM* zVM** system and the host itself through Web browser.

web performance monitor for zVM RTM/ESA

Disclosed is a method and program for monitoring an ongoing activities of a
host operating system(OS) and all of the guest OSs from one of the guest OSs.
The implementation of the program is that functionality of a linux as one of
guest OSs is used to monitor real-time performance of the guests on IBM* zVM**
system and the host itself through Web browser.

Problem

Recently a virtualized technology is focused from Total Cost of Ownership(TCO)
point of view. For example, zVM, one of the IBM Operating System, is used to
run many linux guests in a single hardware box and enable to reduce TCO.

The main issue in the case is to monitor a host OS's resources including CPU,
I/O and memory used by the guests. For example, IBM Real-time Monitor
VM/ESA(RTM/ESA) which runs on the zVM is generally used in monitoring,
analysis and problem solving for short period.

The problem is that guest OS users must not know operations of the host OS if
the kind of guest OS is different from the host's. That is, linux users do
not know the operations including RTM/ESA in z/VM because it is based on the
legacy terminal operation which is not user-friendl y. It does not have Web
interface.

Solution

The objectives of this invention is to enhance functionality of a host OS
easily by using the functions of a guest. This implementation is to help
shifting quickly to zVM from other platforms providing ease of use operation
through Web browser. It could save hundreds of hours to study zVM, RTM/ESA and
its operation, and could save...
