Auditable Industrial Printer Log

Disclosed is an application that inserts relevant accounting information into printer logs

to allow the customer to audit them later to improve their print procedures. It helps printer users answer questions like the following: "How much am I spending on toner to print each page?", "How many jobs are each of my operators printing?", "Which

operator made the mistake of printing job YYYYY on the wrong form?". By knowing

the answers to these questions the print shop customers are able to make their print

process more efficient, streamlined, and less error-prone.

In a typical embodiment the invention works the following way:

(1) An internal event is generated in the printer.

(2) Is it of interest to the customer? If yes go to (3) else go back to (1)

Specifically monitored events include (but are not limited to): Starting/Stopping

the printer. User log in/ log out. Error messages. Printer state changes.

Changing consumables. Activating/deactivating attachments. Selecting

snapshots (setups) etc.

(3) Write event to a special log.

(4) If prompted by the customer display the log, allow log to be saved to removable

media, transmit log over the network.

(5) Reset log if requested by customer or service.

(6) Go back to (1)
