Abstract

Disclosed is a method for enablement of system manageability of a network attached device by a data forwarding function. A data forwarding function forwards requests from the management server to a predefined proxy that will respond on its behalf. The proxy would be transparent to the management server and would have the ability to communicate directly with the device in order to create the response packet Problem : Some network-attached devices cannot currently be managed by systems management software because they do not have the hardware resources necessary to host a full-function management agent. (Figure 1) Solution : Add a data forwarding function to the device such that the device forwards requests from the management server to a predefined proxy (e.g. a PC host system) that will respond on its behalf. The proxy would be transparent to the management server and would have the ability to communicate directly with the device in order to create the response packet. (Figure 2) This method solves the problem by off-loading common management agent modules such as messaging libraries to a system that can host them and leaves only the built-in capabilities of the device (including a network transport) and a function for forwarding requests and responses between the management server and proxy host respectively. The data required by the data forwarding function is limited to a configurable port number that the device could listen on and the address of the proxy host. Both of these items would be user configurable.
