Abstract

We disclose a struture to provide stabilization to the free layer of the Dual CPP GMR sensor. The Hard Bias layer which provides magnetic stabilization to the Free layer is not in direct contact with the Free layer. This is done to reduce dead portions of the free layer where Free layer and Hard Bias layer meet. The active sensor has following layers: S1/PtMn/CoFe/Ru/CoFe/Cu/CoFe/Cu/CoFe/Ru/CoFe/PtMn/Ta/S2. The passive portion between the Hard Bias layers and the active sensor has following layers: S1/PtMn/CoFe/Ru/CoFe/Cu/NiFe/Al2O3/S2. This is achieved by etching the sensor down to "Cu" spacer and relling it NiFe soft magnetic material and then capping it with Al2O3 insulator. This Al2O3 defines the read track width. The layers at the Hard Bias portion of the sensor are: S1/Al3O3/Hard Bias layer/NiFe (refill material)/Al2O3/S2.
