As the user moves through a two-dimensional image the mouse pointer changes colors. The different gradients of color the mouse pointer changes to directly corresponds to data of the z-axis. Disclosed is a mouse pointer which represents the third-dimension of a two-dimensional image through different color gradients. As the user moves through a two-dimensional image the mouse pointer changes colors. The different gradients of color the mouse pointer changes to directly corresponds to data of the z-axis.

The mouse pointer is one of the most important tools a user has for navigating through computer desktop and programs. Proposed is a mouse pointer not only used as an indicator, but also a mouse pointer which communicates data to the user.

This invention best explores the mouse pointer communicating data when envisioning a geographical two-dimensional area map. This map could be that of a city or that of a magnified chip design via CAD. When the user moves the mouse pointer over the area map, it is also receiving the hidden "z-axis data" such as the signal strength of cell phone transmissions of that particular X-Y axis. Or, the user could be seeing the elevation information as they are moving through an online city street map. The latter would be useful for construction purposes. Or as a final example, engineers can view different capacitors on a chip diagram and see which level on the silicon wafer each capacitor exists in relationship to each other.
