Abstract

There are one customer requirement that they want to boot Windows from Microdrive (PC Card ATA) put in PC Card slot. The examples of applications are: 1.While two or more users are sharing one machine, each user can use in his/her own environment by booting from MicroDrive which has installed environment only for themselves. Or, In the case of a business trip, they can use the machine at destination in the same environment as usual, if only they brought this Microdrive. *HDD cannot used for this application because too many times of executing HDD's attach/detach is not guaranteed. 2.When IT section of a corporation examine their user's machine that seems to have problems, they can see whether it is the problem of S/W or H/W by starting and testing in a standard environment from MicroDrive. So booting MS Windows from PC Card ATA Drive is highly required.

When we used DOS, We could(can) boot from PC Card ATA. But we can't boot from it with Windows. Why? In Windows boot, if PC Card Driver is Load, PC Card Controller and PC Card will be initialized by Windows. By beeing initialized, access to PC Card ATA becomes impossible after it. So it makes Boot failure.

To solve it, We implemented as follows.

Our concepts are:

1.H/W solution
2.In MicroDrive Boot, Microdrive is connected to IDE Bus instead of PC Card Bus.
3.From BIOS and OS, it is recognized as not PC Card but IDE HDD. Block Diagram is like this....
