Abstract

Problem: As systems become more dense and sophisticated, it becomes increasingly difficult for Marketing to demonstrate innovative high-speed error recovery design features to customers and for system test organizations to validate high-speed error recovery features. It is no longer a matter of mashing a couple of wires together or using a simple switch to demonstrate or validate these features because the added wire length, alone, will destroy signal timing and signal quality to a device so that normal operation becomes impossible. Therefore, system level error injection circuitry must: 1 . have short net lengths 2 . have remote control 3 . be portable

Problem:

As systems become more dense and sophisticated, it becomes increasingly difficult for Marketing to demonstrate innovative high-speed error recovery design features to customers and for system test organizations to validate high-speed error recovery features. It is no longer a matter of mashing a couple of wires together or using a simple switch to demonstrate or validate these features because the added wire length, alone, will destroy signal timing and signal quality to a device so that normal operation becomes impossible. Therefore, system level error injection circuitry must:

1. have short net lengths 2. have remote control
3. be portable
4. be easy to operate

Solution:

A (1) medium, (Error Injection Medium, EIM), that allows controlled signal interruption or error injection using a (1) high speed electronic switch (QS), that is (2+4) controlled via an external switch box or electronic control and a (3) cable that interconnects the medium and switch box. (4) The control cable is long enough to allow control of the medium outside the system. The medium can be an interposer, such as, an extension card modified to allow high-speed error injection or a device, which is an actual part of the system that is directly modified by lifting pins or providing breaks in a net or wire.
