Method of expanding and collapsing the section automatically in consideration of the display area

A program is disclosed a method of section expanding and collapsing in consideration of the display area. This method enables a user to see information on the selected section as much as possible and to get a big picture view of the information instantly with only one operation.

When a screen cannot display all content at once in order to a restriction of the display area, there are a method to divide the information into sections and display these sections in a collapsed state. A user can display or hide the information by expanding or collapsing a section. There are three given method to expand a section as follows: (1) Expanding all sections of the information

(2) Expanding all descendant sections of the selected section

(3) Expanding a child section of the selected section When the information has many contents, however, there are some problems; (1) and (2) unable a user to get a big picture view of the information because information of descendant sections overflow, and (3) has poor usability because a user needs another operation to get information on grandchildren or other descendants. A method disclosed in this document can resolve these problems.

The tool which creates sections according to the contents and changes displaying or hiding information by section expanding or collapsing can be seen to the discussion database with categories, a spreadsheet with many subtotals and so on. This document explains how to mount the method that is disclosed here by using a spreadsheet as an example. Fig. 1 is the example of the spreadsheet before section expanding (an initial state). In the state of Fig. 1, a user considers expanding the "Kyushu" section. By using this disclosed method, if a user selects the section to expand, display area is acquired first and the sections to expand are determined dynamically with maximizing the number of the displayed sections according to the size...
