Abstract

The Hard Bias layers are placed contiguous with the sensor at both track edges, to provide longitudinal bias to the GMR sensor free layer for magnetic stabilization. Canting the Hard Bias layers (i.e., Hard Bias magnetization making an angle with the air bearing surface) provides additional transverse bias at the free layer. This effect changes the read signal asymmetry by about 10%. The effect therefore, can be used to more properly bias the GMR head.
