Abstract

         A lighting system for a vehicle provides a holographic film for use as a reflector of a light source within a lighting device. The holographic film provides a low cost, low profile reflector for use in vehicle lighting devices such as map lamps, dome lamps, vanity mirror lamps, and the like.

Background

         It is generally know to provide a lamp in a vehicle to illuminate the interior of the vehicle during operation of, or access to, the vehicle during conditions of general darkness. Such lamps may be provided as dome lamps, courtesy lamps, cargo lamps, vanity mirror lamps, etc. and may use LEDs or incandescent-type bulbs or the like as a light source. Such known lamps typically include reflectors having a concave shape (e.g. parabolic, etc.) to reflect light, or may have a flat surface having reflective properties (such as metallic foil, "shiny" surfaces, etc.). However, such reflectors for lamps in a vehicle have the disadvantage of occupying valuable space (for the concave shaped reflectors) or tend to provide relatively unfocused reflection of incident light (such as for the flat surface reflectors). Accordingly, it would be desirable to provide a reflector that provides the reflective properties of a concave shaped reflector and that provides the space or packing size reduction of a flat surface reflector.
